Shimmer- a new composition by composer Vivian Fung

Posted on by meghanray@berkeley.edu

Award-winning SF chamber music group Ensemble for These Times commissioned Canadian-Chinese composer Vivian Fung to write "Shimmer" as part of E4TT's concert, "Dark Universe/ Mysterious Spaces." Composed for one percussionist, "Shimmer" explores the beauty of found objects: the instrumentation simply says “four very high resonant porcelain or metal objects and three very low metal or glass objects,” giving the percussionist the liberty to experiment and play. The very high shimmers, played almost like an improvisation, are contrasted with the stability of a regular drone from the low notes.
